The veteran players on this list know our deep history with the Arroyo Seco region via the AVA's Chardonnay and Pinot Noir offerings in years past. We won't fault you for just jumping to the buy line on this one...

For the uninitiated, Arroyo Seco is one of California's smallest AVAs. About 40 miles southeast of Monterey Bay, it gets direct coastal influence, aka fog and wind, from the Pacific. Protection from the Santa Lucia Mountains to the west keeps rainfall sparse, making the perfect home for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Concentrated raspberry coulis and plum sauce are deftly interwoven with dried leaves, rose, black tea, and black cherries. A bit of air and the entry reveals fresh turned soils, spice, mushrooms, and further black cherry framed by medium, expertly balanced acidity and small, supple tannins. The finish has great length with vanilla, barrel spices, and a resonant red berry and dried leaves umami. Break out the bacon!
