$32/bottle under the original label

Lot 442 isn’t easy to procure on the open market because our source doesn’t make their wines available through retail – it’s tasting room or wine clubs only. Under the original label, it’s $32/bottle, $384/case before shipping, but as we’re seeing more and more these days, a bountiful ’23 harvest has wineries all over California a bit more willing to offer quiet deals on previously unavailable lots.

Available for purchase in the U.S. only excluding AL, AK, AR, DE, HI, MS, ND, RI, UT, WV.
Nestled within the broader Lodi AVA, the Mokelumne River AVA is a gold mine of a sub-appellation for thrilling expressions of classic European white wine varietals. Today’s offering is one of the tinier gems we’ve scooped up all year - 100 cases of splendid single-vineyard Pinot Gris from a boutique winery that’s been growing and making wine in the region for over half a century.

Named after the nearby river whose origins come from high up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Mokelumne River AVA is Lodi’s historic heart and soul, home to continuously farmed vineyards dating back to the late 1800s. The region enjoys a mild Mediterranean microclimate and terroir, with the delta’s breezes leading to cooler afternoons and warmer evenings compared to the neighboring regions. The banks of the mighty Mokelumne River are rich in fine alluvial sandy loam – a fast-draining soil that forces roots deep, limiting yields and resulting in plush, concentrated fruit.

Lot 442 is 100% single-vineyard sourced. It was harvested at perfect ripeness, whole cluster pressed, then fermented in 100% stainless steel with native yeasts to preserve the purity of the terroir. The result is a balanced, yet rich wine at an immensely quaffable 12.2% alc.

Pear, apple, and peach define a nose nestled in crushed gravel, kissed by honey. The entry is expertly weighted and framed by medium+ acidity, showcasing further apple and pear with raw ginger spice and lemon zest. The finish is clean and medium length, with the ginger spice brushed by lemon blossom umami. Come spring and summer, it will pair perfectly with grilled fish or chilled oysters.
