In the midst of the Burgundy craze that’s beset the industry, Village-level wines are often overlooked. Crafted with the same centuries-old artisan approach as Grand and Premier Crus, Village releases boast some of the best QPR on the import market.

That said, you're in luck – we’ve secured an immensely elegant Village-level Volnay that garnered 93 points under its original label from Wine Enthusiast for 60% OFF.

Of all the great Côte de Beaune appellations, Volnay literally stands above the rest – even lower-lying Village vineyards sit at approximately 750 feet up. A mountainous region long celebrated for its ethereal and intricate reds, the extra exposure afforded from the elevation (brighter sun and a stronger wind) yields fruit of unmatched phenolic maturity, producing some of the most elegant wines in all of Burgundy.

It was nothing short of an extraordinary year – Wine Spectator rated the 2019 Côte de Beaune vintage 95 points, and Parker's Wine Advocate gave it a 96. A mild winter was followed by a cold blustery spring, which pushed flowering back to late June. A hotter than average summer balanced the first part of the year perfectly, creating completely ripe, yet immensely focused fruit.

This wine was crafted by a winemaker awarded the triple-crown “Winemaker of the Year” by London’s International Wine Challenge. The grapes were hand-picked and completely destemmed before undergoing vinification without the use of sulfites, and the cap was punched down with the must pumped over regularly to preserve the terroir’s distinctive finesse. Following 18 days of cuvaison (including 4 days of pre-fermentation maceration), the wine was then laid down to 100% French oak barrels, 20% new, and aged for 15 months.

Opening with mushrooms, hibiscus, cinnamon, and cherries haloed by violets on the nose, there’s plenty of both intensity and elegance on display. The entry cascades onto the palate with ripely-fruited red berries, fresh-turned potting soil, and cloves framed by balanced acidity and small, grippy tannins. A clean, dry, medium-length finish is uplifted with red fruits and florals wrapped in barrel-influenced, delicate vanilla. Though approachable now with a decant, this beauty will be singing through a decade+ drinking window.
