Description

Lot 534 is a 100% estate-grown, block-select Pinot Noir from a winery located near the hamlet of Graton – home to some of the Russian River Valley’s most revered producers. Crafted from the finest blocks of their premier cool-climate vineyards, this wine is as varietally pure an expression as you’ll find in the States, made under the watchful eye of a UC Davis-trained winemaker whose tour of duty includes some of the most iconic Napa/Sonoma estates before falling in love with the local rugged, otherworldly terroir. Sold for $75/bottle direct from the tasting room, we were able to close the deal on this beauty at nearly 80% OFF.

The bouquet opens with a vibrant interplay of cranberries and dried herbs, gradually unfurling layers of red licorice and toast. On the palate, the cranberry notes persist, seamlessly accompanied by mushroom, cherries, spice, and a strong Burgundian-like minerality. Deftly interwoven acidity and small, plush tannins lead to a remarkably clean finish, where whispers of flint, spice, and vanilla dance with fresh strawberry umami, leaving a lasting impression of finesse.

We’re back with a second 2023 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir from the same legendary producer as Lot 533!

A sister wine to its “we blinked and it sold out” sibling, today’s release is one of the winery’s signature bottlings, made in a classic Sonoma Coast Pinot style. While 533 was a more full-bodied expression with greater appeal to Cab fans, this in turn is a gorgeously elegant and archetypal “Pinot lover’s Pinot” evoking the great offerings of the Côte de Nuits. As far as the treasure hunt goes for distinguished California Pinot that ticks every box a collector would want, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Sitting mere miles from the Pacific, these vineyards are perched at and just above the fog line, where abundant sunshine ensures optimal ripening. This exposure means the vines endure the full force of winter storms and relentless cold winds. Combined with thin, gravelly soils, you have the perfect recipe for naturally low yields of small, highly concentrated berries. Following 2023’s long cool growing season, that’s exactly what our source harvested. They meticulously hand-sorted each tiny cluster at night in the vineyard and again in the cellar, before destemming the berries to preserve the purity of the fruit. The blocks fermented separately in small open-top fermenters before aging in 100% neutral French oak.
