Description

Lot 538 is an estate private reserve Cabernet Sauvignon meticulously crafted with a splash of Malbec and Cabernet Franc. A big, bold Cab with plenty of graphite and floral nuances befitting an estate reserve offering, it’s a no-expense-spared masterclass in eastside Paso's signature power and complexity. Available direct from the tasting room for about $70/bottle (this wine would probably be double that if the label region said Napa), the owners wanted to secure cash in hand ahead of some planned projects and we were more than happy to be their willing buyer. As always, the readers of this list are the real winners – this super QPR Cab is yours today for almost 80% OFF!

Pouring a deep ruby with an almost impenetrable core, the nose is redolent with graphite, cassis, red clay dust, black cherry, and crushed florals. On the palate, violets and red fruits are uplifted by impeccable spice and framed by medium acidity and plentiful, velvety tannins. The finish is still showing the wine’s youth – barrel spice and vanilla take the lead, though a bit of air reveals red berries, white-to-purple florals, and cherries underneath.

The savvy members of this list know that Paso Robles, despite its ascendancy into one of California’s finest AVAs, has long been a treasure trove of great values on world-class wines. Despite the recent flood of critical accolades, prices haven’t climbed to Napa and Sonoma levels just yet, and in light of industry trends, this is actually working in the region’s favor – the stubborn reluctance to crank up the price tags is one of the reasons they saw a smaller dip in sales volume last year compared to their northern counterparts. Given recent financial headlines, it would be no surprise if this approach continued to work in their favor as consumers are extra conscious about maximizing value for dollar.

Our price: $179/case DELIVERED, $14+/bottle TO YOUR DOOR!

After consecutive dry years, the 2023 winter delivered record rainfall, replenishing soil moisture after years of drought and revitalizing the calcareous soils. A consistently cool summer followed by a very mild fall allowed bunches to ripen gradually with extra hang time, achieving peak phenolic maturity. Hand-picked in late fall, the winemakers vinified individual lots separately and aged them in 100% French oak of the finest cooperage. After blending, the wine was returned to barrel, where it coalesced into an epic expression.
